The importance of social media for any business

When it comes to social media, most business owners know they should be doing something. After all, it’s a free way to communicate with potential customers and means you can keep your brand name out there. That’s just the starting point though. In 2023, having social media platforms is essential for businesses and here I explore exactly why.

Social media statistics

More than 66 million people in the UK are internet users and 84% of the population has a social media account. What’s more, nearly a quarter of social media users say their primary reason for using it is for inspiration for things to do and buy.

However, up to 80% of users admit to buying from social media and 74% of consumers use social media to make a decision on future purchases. These statistics alone show how important it is for businesses to tap into the online world and when you do there are several benefits to enjoy.

Increased brand awareness

One of the biggest reasons to be active on social media is because it helps to get your name out there. In fact, with half of the world’s population said to be on social media, it’s a great way to find new customers across the globe. 83% of Instagram users even admit to discovering new products and brands on the platform.

What’s more, 70% of social media users log in at least once a day and many admit to checking their accounts multiple times an hour. If your business is sharing regular and relevant content, you’ll be more likely to stay front of mind.

Easy customer engagement

Having a presence on social media means you can interact with customers – both existing and potential. You can answer their questions, respond to comments, and showcase company news and services. In fact, it’s a great way to humanise your brand and show off the people in your team, while making real connections online. This can all help your customers to build trust with your business, which we all know is essential for sales.

Social media also makes customer support easier. In this day and age, many consumers will visit social media when they have a concern. If you’re able to respond to their messages, quickly and professionally, it’ll do wonders for your brand reputation and consumer relationship

More traffic, leads and sales

By sharing a recent blog or including a link to your website, your social media posts can drive traffic to exactly where you want your audience to go. Alternatively, you could ask people to get in touch if they require more information or even set up your social media messenger platforms so that they’re designed to collect leads.

Both traffic and lead generation can result in more sales, but you could also share new products and services directly to social media and try to boost sales that way. If your business sells specific products, you could even consider setting up an online store via social media. With the help of social media ads, you could level up your sales strategy to new heights.

Reputation management

Social media is a great way to learn what people have to say about your business – not just to your business directly in the comments and via chat but also on local community groups. After all, we have probably all seen a post where someone is venting their frustrations about a brand. By responding in a professional, calm, and friendly manner, you can address any negatives before they become a bigger problem.

Similarly, if someone is saying something positive about your brand, say thanks and don’t be afraid to share their message for the world to see.

Evolving knowledge

Another fantastic reason to be active on social media is because it keeps you up to date with what’s going on in the world and your industry. It’s a great way to keep an eye on competitors – without them knowing – and you may just find that there are topics you could be talking about or certain activities that you haven’t yet tried.
