Why you don’t need to be on every social media platform

Having recently added several social media packages to the offering at Fox Graphics Design, I’ve been speaking to lots of different business owners – all of whom are struggling with their online presence. From these conversations, one thing is clear: people are overwhelmed with the idea of social media but know they should at least be doing something.

One of the most common questions that I do get asked is whether or not you should be posting on every single platform. The short answer is no, and it might surprise you. Here are a few reasons why I believe this to be true.

It’s time consuming

The most obvious reason as to why you don’t need to be on every single social media platform is because it will take up a lot of your time. Time that you probably don’t have as a business owner. Creating a social media strategy, planning the posts, and then sharing said posts cannot be rushed – especially if you want to do it properly.

In this day and age, it’s simply not enough to just post either. You need to be engaging with others by sharing, commenting, and liking their content. Not only will this help your name and profile to get out there, but the social media bots prioritise accounts that they deem successful at this meaning your content will then be shared in front of more people.

If you’re trying to have a presence on all social media platforms, you run the risk of rushing your efforts. Instead, you’d be better off focusing on one or two platforms and ensuring that your profile, content, and engagement are of a high-quality. This leads me nicely onto the next point…

It can do more harm than good

One of the biggest issues I see with businesses that have several different social media accounts is that they get so overwhelmed and tied up with other tasks that their platforms become redundant. 74% of consumers say they consult a company’s social media page before making a purchase. So, if you haven’t posted on your channel for a few weeks because you don’t have the time, it can do irreparable damage.

In fact, inactive social media channels can even make your company appear closed. For this reason, it’s important to drill down into one or two platforms and consistently add new content as well as engage with those who are commenting or sharing your posts. You don’t even need to be posting every single day. Quality is better than quantity remember so try to post up to three times a week.

It might not be relevant to your audience

As a business owner, when you’re trying to grow your online presence and win new customers, it can feel that more is more. The more social media channels you have, the more people will see your posts and the more custom you’ll achieve, right?! Wrong. Put simply, your audience isn’t on every channel, and you could be wasting that much-needed time by focusing on platforms that aren’t relevant.

This requires a little insight into your target audience and buyer personas. Who are they? Are they online? Which platforms do they use? With these answers, you’ll be able to determine the best social media platform for your business. Facebook and Instagram are ideal for B2C whereas LinkedIn is best suited for B2B. Each platform suits different needs and interests so it’s important to weigh it up for your business and offering. As the old saying goes, “when you try to please everyone, you end up pleasing no one at all.”
